I love hearing from people from all over the world about their big dreams, big ideas and their big plans to build their dreams businesses. I have answered some of the most common questions people ask me and I’ve divided them up into three different sections. If your question isn’t answered here, try subscribing to my monthly newsletter. I answer questions each month and if you’re looking for more regular, direct contact, think about joining the community – then we can chat it up on the regular in the Facebook group!
Questions About One Of Kari’s Books
Q: A) I have the first edition of The Handmade Marketplace and I’d like to know where the worksheets are that you reference in the book? B) I have Grow Your Handmade Business and I’m looking for the audio download you mention. Where is it?
Thanks for asking about the worksheets and audio file. Neither one of them are available now. If I ever re-do and put them up, I’ll put up notice on the front page of the website.
Q: How can I be in the creative collective?
I choose people to be in the creative collective based on how well I know their work. Almost everyone who has been included is someone I’ve worked with before or whose products I own. Here and there I ask the wise people of the Internet for recommendations and that would be a good time to let me know about you and your work.
Q: When is your next book coming out?
I have three books on the shelves now, and the most recent was published in April of 2014. I have something very exciting being released in 2015, so keep your eyes out for the big announcement. In the meanwhile, I am focused on self publishing and you can hop on over to my sales page to see all of the things I’ve written for you recently.
Q: I want to talk to you about something I read in one of your books. What should I do?
Send me an email! Use the contact form to send me any questions you may have. It’s hard for me to respond to every email I get, but I do my best and I sometimes round up the questions I get and answer them in my newsletter. So if you’re not signed up for that yet, go here.
Q: I live in a far away country and your books aren’t available anywhere! How can I get a copy of them?
I sell them here on my website. I am happy to ship internationally, but the shipping is high – which of course I can’t control. If you’re interested in buying one, head on over here and go ahead and purchase them. I sign all books I mail personally and if you’d like a custom message, just ask! I’ll be sure to do it for you. And THANK YOU!
Q: I love your books and I want to tell you all about it!
Thank you! I love that you love my books! Feel free to use my contact form and send me your thoughts. This is also a great time to mention how much I appreciate all of your reviews and how much they help me. If you are so inclined, please write a review on the website of your choice. It helps future readers and it helps me a lot. Some good places to start are your own website, Amazon and Good Reads. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Questions About Crafts Business
Q: Can you review my shop/blog/website/business card/business plan/social media feed/shop policies and give me some advice?
Nope. Sorry – I cannot do this. However, if you join my newsletter and request to join my private Facebook group, you can post there an ask for advice from the community. There are a whole bunch of helpful people and it’s a great place to ask for feedback.
Q: I have a legal / tax / accounting / bookkeeping / hiring question. Can you help?
Nope. I am not a lawyer, tax expert, bookkeeper or human resource director. While I can help with very general things, you can find all I know in my books.
Q: Should I make my business legal?
Yes. I will not ever advise you to do something illegal. Check out the law in your country, state, city/town, county or province. And if you live in a village or a hamlet or on an island, I am sure they have some kind of requirement or rules. Just just with your local officials wherever you are to get started.
Q: My family doesn’t really support what I do. How can I deal with that?
I have covered this in Grow Your Handmade Business and I write and speak about this topic from time to time. It all boils down to you taking charge of your dream. If your family doesn’t get it, than explain it to them in the best way you know how. Keep working hard and share your results with them. Show them what you’re doing and why it’s important to you. Involve them if there is a way to do it that makes sense to you and your business. Keep on keeping on friend.
Q: Can you look over my everything and give me some feedback? I need help with my shop / products / marketing.
Sorry – I cannot do this. Try asking for an accountability partner in the Facebook group or ask a friend who can help you. Offer to swap feedback – give something back in return. If you and I are working together, sometimes these things are a part of our processes, but this is not a service I offer a la carte.
Q: I have an idea but I’d like to know what you think about it.
Great! Sign up for a session and we’ll talk about it. I meet five times a month with people who’d like to chit chat about their business in a general sense – and if I have any openings, I’d be glad to hear your idea and offer any advice that I can. These sessions are confidential and I love nothing more than a good brainstorm. I’m not to keen on “brain picking” but I am keen on exchanging value for value. If you want to pick my brain, please sign up for one of these sessions. I promise to bring my A-Game and you’ll leave happy.
To sign up for a session, use the contact form and send me an email. Tell me a little bit about what you’d like to talk about so I can tell if I’d be a good match for that. Before we get that far though, I want to make sure you know that is costs $75 bucks to pick my brain and that’s for a full 45 minute session – you’ll get my time, my experience, my thoughts. Sound good? Great!
Questions About Working With Kari
Q: Do you review books and or products? If I send you something will you promote it?
I am happy to accept products to review that fit in with my community, which is creative business owners. If you are a company who makes supplies or a publisher who has a book to promote, please use my contact form and tell me about it. If it’s a good match for my audience, I’ll pass along the mailing information. I donate or give away all review products. Just so you know. And I don’t do reviews for pay. My review will be 100% honest and I’m sure you know the rest.
Q: I want to hire you, but I’m just starting out and can’t afford your rates. Can you cut me a deal or offer a discount?
If it’s not a good time for us to work together directly, that’s okay. I’ve created a lot of resources and hopefully some of them will be what you’re looking for. My most affordable advice can be found in my books and in my guides, which are over here.
Q: I just want to pick your brain for a little while, can we talk for just a little bit?
I wouldn’t advise you to work for free and I can’t work for free either. Sign up for my newsletter and join the Facebook group and ask questions. Respond to the answers your community provides. Have fun figuring things out. If you want to talk with me directly, schedule a session and we’ll talk about anything and everything you’re interested in. (Also see above for more info about these kind of sessions)
Q: I’d like to write a guest post for your website/ be a featured maker / send you a book to review / I have a product that your community will love!
Thanks so much for thinking about me and my readers. Use my contact form and send me your pitch. If we’re a good match, I’ll send you all the info you need. Be sure to include all relevant information I’ll need to get to get to know you, your writing and your product better. As far as that pitch goes, just send a few short sentences and links to your stuff. No need to send attachments.
Personal Questions About Kari Chapin
Q: Where do you live?
I live in lovely and magical Portland, Oregon. I used to live in New England and a lot of people think I still do, but nope! Portland, Oregon!
Q: How do you get your writing done?
Anyway I can! Ba Dum! I write every single day, even on my days off and if I’m not writing, I’m thinking about writing and I might even be thinking about you writing. Books are my favorite. If you want to write a book and you think I can help, go over here. How did you get started? I got started the old fashioned way. I had an idea that I believed in and I hunted and searched for the right person to talk to about it. Then I worked hard, learned so much about the whole process, fell in love with publishing and then I did it again and again.
Q: What kind of crafts do you do?
I like making all the things. There is nothing I won’t try. When I’m not learning something new, I embroider, crochet and needle felt. I also like flower arranging and pottery and photography.
Q: I hear you’re super funny and really beautiful and insanely talented. How’d you get that way?
Aw. You have obviously been talking to my mother. This is a joke question. No one has ever asked that. Just wanted to see if you were still reading.
Q: Wait! Wait! My question wasn’t answered!
